メニュー

Along with the likes of Kaga Yuzen dyeing, Kutani pottery, and Kanazawa lacquerware, Kanazawa gold leaf is a traditional craft that should never be forgotten in Kanazawa. Kanazawa, boasting upwards of 99% of domestic gold leaf production, is nothing short of being the “Town of Gold Leaf”. Gold Leaf Sakuda was founded in 1919 by a gold leaf artisan and is currently patronized by customers in a diversity of fields from all over Japan. Gold leaf from Sakuda is also used widely overseas by renowned glass artisans and as an ingredient in foods and cosmetics. Carrying on the traditions and history of the intricate and complex gold leaf manufacturing process, we produce ambitious works of gold leaf traditional craft through engaging in new challenges and collaborating across different disciplines.
Sakuda’s Core Values
Products
  • Gold Leaf Base Material

Today, more than 99% of foil production — which leverages traditional techniques passed down for over 400 years — is done in Ishikawa prefecture. Foil production thrives particularly in Kanazawa, where we offer foil of the finest quality after finished foil undergoes inspection by the well-trained eyes of foil artisans and specialists. Also, for customers just getting started working with foil, just bring any issues and questions to our foil experts, Kinpaku-ya Sakuda (“Gold Leaf Sakuda”)

  • Gold Leaf Crafts

At Gold Leaf Sakuda, we welcome our customers with a wide variety of product variations featuring Kanazawa foil produced by our master artisans — from quintessential Japanese-style craft pieces, to glass and dining ware. Foil has tremendous appeal as an accent for fancifully setting off craft works, and in order to make the most of its appeal as a material, we portray the good of Japan by combining it in collaboration with traditional crafts from other prefectures, as well as provide assistance in drawing out new aspects of foil by offering base material to all kinds of artists.

  • Gold Leaf Cosmetics

In ancient Egypt, Cleopatra used gold threads to preserve her beauty and maintain firm skin, while in China the ancient beauty Yang Guifei is said to have treasured gold as a serene potion. With that in mind, we at Gold Leaf Sakuda have developed our safe, high-quality Birei line of products after numerous prototypes in order to meet the demands of customers in search of beauty and health. The gold leaf used in cosmetics is a special-made gold leaf (kinka, “gold flower”) that has been drained of copper, and we are sure that, with its pleasant splash of gold leaf, the visually tantalizing, glamorous Birei line — which can exist only as a gold leaf maker’s original cosmetics brand — will make a delightful present.

  • Gold Leaf Food Products

In recent times, one of gold leaf’s uses has been its widespread utility for culinary purposes. Gold leaf gives a fancy touch to meals and it can be used easily, not only in meals but also in confectionery and drinks, making it a product that can bestow customers with a lavish timeout. At Gold Leaf Sakuda, we have put in place a special inspection area in consideration of food hygiene safety and to prevent contamination from any impurities, we provide our foil to customers only after undergoing a three-stage (machine inspection → visual inspection → visual inspection) quality inspection. We also provide foil sizes to meet use cases and foil with alloy composition ratios in line with customer needs upon consultation.

  • Architectural Decoration

Gold leaf allows the inherent tactile quality of materials covered in it to shine through fully thanks to its one ten-thousandth of a millimeter thickness. We feature two gold and platinum restrooms in our store that use construction tiles taking advantage of this fact. There are motifs symbolizing Ishikawa Prefecture on the walls, so please feel free to see for yourself the lavishness composed by gold and platinum and get a feel for the texture and thinness when you visit our shop. Our branch store in Higashi Chaya District also has a wall featuring gold leaf at the entrance, so be sure to stop by there, too.

  • Maki-e Art Stickers

Maki-e (“sprinkled pictures”, art using Japanese lacquer sprinkled with gold or silver powder) created by the skills of seasoned craftsmen is a technique known for having particularly resplendent beauty even amongst the lacquer arts. At Sakuda, we developed “Maki-e Stickers” to make the beauty of maki-e more accessible and more familiar for our customers to enjoy. Why not try making your own “Maki-e Sticker” using your favorite pattern or design, beginning with company names or brand logos? You can put it to use in a variety of ways including as a novelty or as a sightseeing souvenir.
