About Sakuda

Gold Leaf Sakuda was launched in 1919 by a producing artisan of gold leaf, later earning the patronage of the Buddhist altar and altar accessory industry in addition to those in craft-related fields as a wholesaler carrying a diversity of gold leaf, a position in which it remains today. At first, we were engaged in sales of gold leaf as a material, but beginning around 1970 when we first considered making craft goods using gold leaf on our own, we began making our Crafts Made By Gold Leaf Masters, and we have been striving towards crafting our products as we hold on to our dream of making products that will be considered as traditional works of craft 50 years or 100 years from now. In the initial stages, we were making gold leaf lacquerware with gold leaf applied to Yamanaka lacquerware, but today we are producing numerous hybrid products combining gold leaf with traditional Japanese craft techniques produced throughout the country, in addition to the numerous variations we have with glass, cloth, copperware, and so forth.

Now, Kanazawa shoulders approximately 100% of domestic production of gold leaf and has become recognized as the “Town of Gold Leaf” by visitors from Japan and around the world. Gold Leaf Sakuda has its main store near the Higashi Chaya District, a Kanazawa tourist area, and features tours of the gold leaf manufacturing process, hands-on gilting workshops, a gold leaf mini-museum, gold leaf crafts shop, golden restrooms made with gold leaf and platinum foil, and much, much more. We are sure you can enjoy your fill of gold leaf’s charm. Our store also has a homely atmosphere and we offer a warm welcome to all of our guests visiting the store.

Since 2008, we have been featured in the Michelin Blue Guide for tourism and numerous overseas guides to Japan, and every year we are visited by guests from 80-90 countries around the world. We would be more than pleased to welcome you when you stop by on your visit to Ishikawa and Kanazawa. Moving forward, we as a staff will give it our utmost in seeking out the radiance inherent in gold leaf to ensure that we can provide products that can earn the love, delight, and satisfaction of our customers. Also, we are ready for and ideas and/or advice from you on crafts using gold leaf, so if there is anything that you notice please feel free to let us know.
